Bend Testing

Plastics pipes and fittings — testing of welded joints of thermoplastics.

The purpose of this bend test is to assess the performance of the butt welded joints. This test consists of subjecting a HDPE butt fusion weld test sample to deformation by bending at a constant speed of 50mm a minute in a mechanical test machine, without reversing the direction of bending during the test.

The bend angle and fracture appearance results provide a guide to the ductility and quality of the welded joint and give a clear result on the weld quality and integrity.

The final angle is taken, when the weld area fracture occurs or a crack is visible with the naked eye and the maximum load is reached.

If no crack occurs the test is terminated when a bend angle of 160 degrees is achieved.

The bend test samples are tested into one of our 10kN mechanical testing machine.

When sending the bend test welds they need to be cut 200 mm either side of the center of the weld bead or sent for testing along with the test document filled out with all the information that is required on the NATA report. The test weld should be clearly marked, project No, welder ID, joint id/ No, welding machine ID and date.

Bend Testing is an essential means of ascertaining the integrity of butt fusion welds produced and helps identify poor quality production welds and products at the earliest stage, before it has the potential to become a costly error.
